Welcome to the Virtual Breeder!
If you have any comments or suggestions relating to genetics or the Virtual Breeder, please send them to me (Kirsten) at anderson@kirstenmunson.com. I do love hearing from you guys! We offer gifts for the tiel lover in the gift shop! You'll also find original paintings in the art gallery. Virtual Breeder Instructions You will need the Shockwave plug-in to use this breeder. If you don't have it, you will see an icon on the left half of this window (a red "X" or a puzzle piece, usually). Click on the icon and you will be taken to the plug-in download site. It only takes a few minutes to complete, and it's worth it! Use this virtual breeder to calculate the offspring your breeding pairs could produce. Click on the "male" and "female" tabs and select the appropriate check boxes to indicate the parents' types. You can only choose one set of parents at a time. Either click the tab again or click the "Set Male" or "Set Female" buttons when you have chosen each bird's type, and press the "breed" button to view the breeding results. If the male you enter is split to one or more sex-linked mutations, the breeder will let you specify which of the male's two X chromosomes (X1 and X2, as they are named here) contain these mutations (this applies only to splits, since a visual sex-linked mutation occupies both chromosomes). For the sake of order, let's say that X1 is the chromosome he inherited from his father, and X2 is the one he got from his mother. If he only has one sex-linked mutation, it doesn't matter whether you put it on X1 or X2 -- the results will be the same. Of course, if you know that your male is the result of a crossover, assign the mutations accordingly. Finally, the results will specify whether the male chicks' splits occupy X1 or X2 by separating the two into bracketed sets. The virtual breeder's results will not include crossover possibilities. If you want to learn more about crossovers and sex-linked mutations, read this. Note on whiteface and pastelface: You cannot select whiteface/pastelface combinations that are not physically possible (e.g. you can't select both visual whiteface and visual pastelface, because these mutations occupy the same part of the affected gene). If you try to choose both of these mutations, the breeder will automatically check the whiteface and pastelface buttons in the "splits" column, since this is the only way the two mutations can coexist. |
